The Thor Base at $329 plays the same sixteen systems as the Pocket DS, takes one letter band lower on the Wii U only, weighs 160 g less and carries Wi-Fi 7. The DS earns its $70 with a 7 inch 165 Hz OLED, a 5 inch second screen, 8000 mAh and an aluminium body, but it does not play more.

Two dual-screen Android clamshells, released in the same month, that our grade sheet cannot tell apart. The AYN Thor and the AYANEO Pocket DS are graded on eighteen systems each. They take the same letter on seventeen of them and both are playable on sixteen. The one column that separates them is the Wii U, where the DS holds an A and the Thor an A- - a distinction between two devices that can already play the system.

The interesting part is not the grade sheet. It is that the $150 every shop window quotes between them is not a price difference at all.

Sixteen of eighteen, twice

Our capability index grades 442 tracked handhelds on up to eighteen systems and carries a price for 375 of them. The Thor and the Pocket DS both clear the playable line - B or better, the definition used everywhere on this site - on sixteen: everything from the Game Boy to the Wii U, with the Switch and the PlayStation 3 sitting in the C band, where a system boots and does not become a library.

Only 25 priced devices reach exactly sixteen playable systems. The Thor at $249 is the fourth cheapest of the 25; the Pocket DS at $399 is the sixteenth. Neither is near the ceiling of the catalogue - 91 priced devices play sixteen or more and 53 of those play all eighteen - but a dual-screen machine is a different purchase from a bigger single panel, and on that shelf the field is five devices wide.

Priced dual-screen handhelds, cheapest first: the RG DS at $94 with nine playable systems, the Thor at $249 and the Pocket DS at $399 with sixteen each, then nothing until the AYANEO Flip DS at $739 and the Flip 1S DS at $799, both of which play all eighteen. That gap is the real decision in this category - sixteen systems for under $400, or the full sheet for $739 and up.

One letter band, and what it is worth

System AYN Thor AYANEO Pocket DS
Wii U A- A
Nintendo Switch C+ C+
PlayStation 3 C C

Seventeen columns identical, and the eighteenth is a band inside "playable". 51 priced devices in the index are graded A on the Wii U and 12 are graded A-, so that is a crowded shelf at the top: the Thor does not lose a system to the DS, it loses part of one.

The shape of the two devices explains why. Both are clamshells with a second screen in the base, both shipped in October 2025, both run Android 13, and both sit on Qualcomm silicon from the same generation. What our sheet calls a grade is a compatibility outcome - will this library run - and at this price the answer stops depending on which of the two you bought.

Three AYANEO devices differ from the Thor in exactly one column, and all three differ on the Wii U: the Pocket S Mini at $319, the Pocket ACE at $329 and the Pocket DS at $399. Four devices share the Thor's exact eighteen-column vector, and all four are AYN's own - the Odin 2 at $299, the Odin 2 Portal at $299, the Odin 2 Mini at $339 and the Thor at $249, the cheapest of them. That is what one silicon generation looks like when you put it in a table.

The $150 gap is a chip mismatch

Here is the sentence that changes the arithmetic. AYN's own store, read on 30 October 2026, lists the Thor in five tiers, and they are not the same machine:

  • Lite at $259 - Snapdragon 865, 8 GB + 128 GB
  • Base at $329 - Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 8 GB + 128 GB
  • Pro at $409 - Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 12 GB + 256 GB
  • Max at $479 - Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 16 GB + 512 GB
  • Max at $579 - Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 16 GB + 1 TB

The $249 our index tracks, and the $259 AYN charges for the Lite, buy the 2020 chip with the same panels and the same 6000 mAh battery. The grade row on this page - and the sixteen playable systems in it - describes the 8 Gen 2 configuration, which starts at $329.

So the comparison that decides this page is $329 against the DS at $399: $70, not $150. Priced at its cheapest tier the Thor is a Snapdragon 865 handheld next to a Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 one, and calling those the same device is exactly the mistake a spec table invites.

What $70 buys

AYN Thor (Base at $329) AYANEO Pocket DS ($399)
SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Adreno 740, 2.0 - 3.2 GHz Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, Adreno A32, 3.36 GHz
Memory 8, 12 or 16 GB 8, 12 or 16 GB LPDDR5X at 8533 MT/s
Storage 128 GB, UFS 3.1 128 GB to 1 TB, UFS 4.0
Screens 6.0 in AMOLED 1920 x 1080 at 120 Hz, plus 3.92 in AMOLED 1240 x 1080 at 60 Hz 7.0 in OLED 1920 x 1080 at 165 Hz, plus 5.0 in IPS 1024 x 768
Battery 6000 mAh 8000 mAh
Weight 380 g 540 g
Body 150 x 94 x 25.6 mm, plastic 179.8 x 101.8 x 25 - 34.4 mm, aluminium and plastic
Wireless Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3
Extras none fingerprint reader, gyroscope

Read that as a list of trades rather than a list of upgrades. The DS buys a larger primary panel with a faster refresh, a second screen 1.1 inches bigger and noticeably less clever - IPS against the AMOLED in the Thor's base - 2000 mAh more battery, UFS 4.0 storage, an aluminium shell and a fingerprint reader. The Thor buys 160 grams, a wireless generation and a footprint that fits a jacket pocket. At 540 g and up to 34.4 mm thick, the DS is closer to a small laptop than to the DS Lite it is named after.

One caveat on the silicon: the G3x Gen 2 is the newer part and clocks higher, and sustained frame rates in the heaviest emulators will favour it. Our grade sheet does not measure frame rates. It measures whether a system runs at all, so that advantage is invisible in the letters above - and if you are chasing the last few frames in a Switch title that is already in the C band, the DS is the better machine and this table will never say so.

Which should you buy

Buy the Thor, and buy the Base tier. $329 buys the same sixteen playable systems, a body 160 g lighter, Wi-Fi 7 and an AMOLED second screen. The $70 it saves against the Pocket DS costs nothing in this index.

Buy the Pocket DS if the panel is the point - a 7 inch 165 Hz OLED with a 5 inch screen under it, in a metal body, with 8000 mAh behind it - or if you specifically want the faster Qualcomm part. Those are real reasons to spend $70 more. "It is more powerful, so it plays more" is not one of them: on our sheet the DS plays the same sixteen systems and takes one letter band higher on a seventeenth.

If you want the Switch and the PlayStation 3 as well, neither of these is the answer. The dual-screen devices that play all eighteen start at $739.

A note on the two prices

The $249 in our index is the Thor's tracked figure, carried over from the public sheet the whole catalogue is built on. AYN's store on 30 October 2026 charges $259 for that same Lite tier and $329 for the 8 Gen 2 Base. We keep the tracked figure so that every "cheapest device that plays ..." ranking on this site stays comparable, and we name the store price beside it here.

The $399 for the Pocket DS is likewise our tracked figure. AYANEO sells the device through an Indiegogo campaign and a client-rendered store, so we could not read a live first-party price for it on the same day. The $399 is the base configuration of the range the catalogue records, which runs to $719 at the largest storage tier.
